When it comes to base layers and moisture-wicking shirts, I can full on geek out. What shoes and bags are to a lot of women, performance tops are to me.
While I’ve definitely been known to spew out techy jargon like “Durable Water Repellent Finish” and “Raglan Sleeves,” for me a quality base layer is all in the feel.
How do I feel wearing this on the side of a mountain while waiting out a thunder storm? How do I feel in it as I lounge around the house? How does this feel under a puffy vest and softshell jacket as I skin up a mountain in the winter? And ... could this be considered professional work wear? (I live in a pretty laid back mountain town, so it’s amazing how often the answer to that last question is YES!)
Today, I share with you my five favorite base layers and moisture-wicking shirts from small and startup outdoor brands!
NW Alpine Black Spider Hoody
Made from Polartec®, High Efficiency Power Dry® fabric, the NW Alpine Black Spider Hoody is an extremely versatile base layer. Its extra-long length in the torso tucks nicely into ski pants and under a climbing harness. Read our full review here.
Voormi River Runner Hoodie
The Voormi River Run Hoodie handles the height of the summer sun with as much poise as it does a crisp morning start. This light and airy – yet warm and cozy – base layer is made in the U.S. exclusively from Rocky Mountain High Country™ wool.
Kora Shola 230 SS Crew
Made from 100% Himalayan yak wool, the Kora Shola 230 SS Crew shirt is 40% warmer than equivalent merino fabrics and more breathable! It is intended for spring and autumn adventures when conditions and temperatures can change fast.
Peak to Plateau Kailash 1/4 Zip LS Yak Wool Shirt
Made from a blend of 65 percent yak wool and 35 percent tencel, which comes from a eucalyptus tree, the Peak to Plateau Kailash 1/4 Zip is undeniably soft. It is also warm and breathable, and less irritable to those who are sensitive to merino.
Give’r Silkweight All Sport Shirt
The Give’r Silkweight All Sport was designed to be stretchy and silky smooth. Made with 95% polyester and 5% spandex, you can wear it either as a standalone layer or a base layer. Use it to guard against UV rays in summer and wind burn in winter.
