Welcome to Garage Grown Gear! We are a team of outdoorsy individuals dedicated to supporting the growth of small outdoor companies, startups, and cottage industry vendors. We believe there is something inherently wonderful about supporting new ideas, and that new brands spark fresh conversation and innovation within the outdoor industry.
One way to think about the products we offer through Garage Grown Gear ... the 'Farm to Table' version of outdoor gear.
Founded in 2014, the Garage Grown Gear team is a collection of ultralight backpackers, backcountry skiers, paddlers, ultramarathoners, mountain bikers, climbers and generally outdoorsy humans.
Split between offices in Driggs, Idaho and Saint Paul, Minnesota, we live and breathe the products we carry. Our curated online store carries gear, apparel, and food, and our online magazine features gear reviews, brand profiles, Kickstarter roundups, and outdoor stories and news.
While we love supporting the growth of small businesses, we couldn’t do it without our wonderful community! By rocking gear and apparel from small companies, you automatically become an ambassador for that brand. You transform into a connection point between the incredible products and companies you support and the person who is unaware such a wildly cool piece of gear exists.
New products and new businesses are the culmination of thousands of hours of thinking, planning, and dreaming, and by supporting their development, you are supporting real people with real aspirations. Thanks for your commitment to supporting the little guys!
Ever have a question about any of the brands or products we carry? Is there a company you think we should work with? Don’t hesitate to drop us a message and let us know!
Meet the Team
Lloyd Vogel — Co-Founder
Lloyd was born and raised in the booming metropolis of Milwaukee, Wisconsin! He discovered his love of kayaking along the shores of Lake Michigan, and spends his ever diminishing free time kayaking, backpacking, playing ultimate frisbee, and eating disproportionally large meals.
Lloyd got his start in business through Big Outdoors, which merged with Garage Grown Gear in March 2017. Prior to that he was a special education teacher. While the world of startups and education are plenty different, a background in herding kittens has helped him in both professional pursuits. He's the guy on our chat feature, our 1 midwesterner, and our token redhead.
Favorite piece of trail gear? “The Hiker fanny pack by Thru. Hands down. Nothing keeps you more organized and more fashionable. You won’t catch me on trail without it!”
Amy Hatch — Co-Founder
Amy got her start in business when she launched Jackson Hole Packraft. Through it she learned how to start, run and ultimately sell a business. She also gained the confidence to launch a larger venture ... er, umm ... adventure.
Amy's background is in journalism. She ran a community newspaper at age 23 and worked as a producer at Alaska's leading broadcast news station.
When not tapping away at the keyboard, Amy can be found playing with her daughter, drinking coffee and training for adventure races. She loves trail running, mountain biking and skate skiing ... but above all backcountry skiing. And, that, is why she calls the Tetons home.
Garage Grown Gear Store Favorite: Purple Rain Skirt. "Wear it backpacking and packrafting, or to music festivals and networking events. Best pockets ever. And love the yoga-style waistband"
Sean Groth — CFO
Sean worked on a fly-fishing ranch for a dozen years in West Yellowstone and spent a lot of time backpacking, fishing and biking. After playing three years of Junior hockey, he fell in love with the town of Bozeman and decided to go school at Montana State University.
Receiving an Industrial Engineering degree, Sean moved to Seattle to work for the Boeing Company building commercial airplanes for six years. Sean recently completed his MBA degree from the University of Montana, and is the financial guru of GGG!
Garage Grown Gear Store Favorite: Anything and everything from Voormi! Hard not to like USA wool.
